How much does a round straw bale weigh? im talking about straw not hay im thinking around 1000 pounds? or so
i want to know because im building a utility trailer that is 7ft wide and 14'10'' end to hitch and i know the hitch will support it being as i took it off of a mobile home with a 2 5/16 ball and it will have a 3500lb axle
towing with a 1985 gmc 1/2 ton pickup | | when it's damp count on 2 000 | Anyone living near Benton, KY have a gooseneck that we can borrow to go pick up a load of hay? In October, we're looking at going to Texas and picking up a load of round bales of hay from my dad to bring back up here to sell. The only problem is, we're having no luck finding a trailer to go get it. We're looking for a gooseneck. Is anyone willing to let us borrow a trailer to go get the load? | | i don't but i'm sure someone does. try www.craigslist.com | Should i move my horse? i am thinking about moving my horse (kept in pasture boarding) because of feeding situations and the condition of the field.
right now, we board our 10 year old gelding, who i share with my sister, on about 10 acres of land with 5 other horses. the land has a steep incline leading up to a flatter area at the top. the field is surrounded by a forested area. at the bottom of the hill there is a creek and an area for a round bale. the woman who owns the property feeds one round bale per day and does not seed the acreage so there is not a lot of grass. she does not feed grain in the summer, but she does in the winter. in the winter, the bottom area by the round bale is very muddy.
at the place where we board our horse, there is also stall boarding. there is an indoor arena, shower area, and a large outdoor arena which cannot be used because it has poor drainage and it is filled with weeds. my sister and i take lessons with our horse with an instructor who is leaving the stable at the end of july. there are also trails that go through the woods, but they are no longer available for use by borders.
it is $170 per month to board here.
the place that we are thinking about moving our horse to has 100 acres, all covered in grass. there are 30 horses there. there are trails, but no arena. there is a riding instructor there.
if we moved our horse there, because it is cheaper, we might be able to get another horse so both my sister and i can have one. we also could trailer our horse(s) out to a lake house that we have, because there is a grassy 1/2 acre there that we could fence in and keep them on for the weekends.
it is $90 per month to board there.
SHOULD I MOVE MY HORSE??
thank you for reading my monologue and for your help!! | I would go there a couple of times and check things out, sounds like no matter where you move you will move to a better place but check things out at the new place. as in plenty of fresh water, many injuries (if so have they been tended to?), are all 30 horses kept together? Will they keep your horse separate at first and slowly introduce him to the new horses ?
Will your current vet and farrier go to the new facility if you so wish and they are good ones to ask about a stables reputation too.
Find out hours of operation. what is included in your board, what you are allowed to do, Are the feeding times the same or within 30 mins every day.If your horse is picked on repeatedly or run off from grain , that type of situation will they separate him, do they have enough room to do so or do they just have an 100 acres fence or do they have several paddocks , for this and for rotation purposes?
Is their shelter ?
So on and so forth.
TIP: when moving a horse from one facility to another , don't burn bridges at the old facility when leaving as you never know , you may need to come back for some reason and wont be able to. | Question about horse I'm looking at? She has amazing ground manners. She's a good horse, she has nice movement, she loads in trailers, clips, shoes, bathes, blankets, bridles (really easily- opens her mouth and keeps it open right when she SEES the bridle) and does everything really well.
BUT, she has a bad problem with flies. Shes really sensitive, and wind, flies, etc tickles her face and she needs 'fly muzzles' on her most of the time, even if flies aren't around.
The owner thinks it might be HSS (head shaking syndrome) but she only does it for the warm up of riding, then she warms up into the ride and stops.
Also, her barrel is big enough for me- a couple of inches to spare. but i'm only 13 and still growing for awhile more.
She's 16.2, 7 years old, and I'm 5'8" (or more) and, as I said, 13.
Again- good horse, but she does have her issues, as all do.
Do you think it is Head shaking syndrome? it's not proven by the vets- she's healthy.
ALSO,
She can't have round bales because she gets a bad cough. she needs square bales for whatever reason.
And her hind legs are naturally 'swollen' but it's not actually swelling, its just like, abnormally thick fetlocks and such? But she's been looked at for that by the vets and she's fine.
Never been lame, she's a fun, healthy, completely sane horse.
Here are pictures:
gerihivesphotography.com/main.php…
Good conformation, nice muscling, everyone at this barn LOOOVES her.
her vices are head shaking and head butting.
She's for sale because the owner needs a horse of a higher level.
My question is... is she worth it? ($15,000)
Thankyouu <3 | Is she worth it? I think that only you can answer this question. She's a nice looking Warmblood mare, and they don't come cheap. She looks like a nice mover, and probably has the potential to go even farther in dressage. $15,000 is not that much for a warmblood.
Many horses will get a cough from eating round bales. That's because the mold content in the big round bales is higher than in the smaller square bales. I'd cough if I had to eat mold too, so I wouldn't worry about that. As for the "swollen" legs, I'm not sure if you are just saying that she's big boned, if she stocks up, has windpuffs, ??? I really can't say if that would be a concern since I'm not sure what the problem is! But that's a question to ask your vet on the prepurchase exam anyway.
As far as the head shaking, I have seen it in a couple horses. In both cases it was mildly annoying but you could easily put up with it. And head shaking syndrom is really difficult to diagnose. Some vets don't even believe in it! If you've known this horse for a long time and it doesn't seem to be getting any worse over time, then I think if you can put up with the head tossing during your warmup I would still consider geting her. I used to have a lesson horse who had head shaking syndrome. Some riders hardly noticed it, and others it drove them crazy. The horse only did it occasionally, but every now and then he'd have a really bad day and toss his head the entire ride. Other times he would not shake his head at all. Had he been a show horse, it would have been more of a problem.
Every horse has their good and bad points. Maybe you can use the head shaking problem to bargain down the price. You should also look at other horses in the same price range to see what else is out there. No horse will be perfect- you'll have to put up with some flaw in each. Only you can decide what your priorities are! | Show name for a Strawberry Roan Overo Pinto Pony? I am looking at getting a large pony/small horse(she is 14.2 hh. exactly). She is a rescue horse. I am going to show her in Western, English(maybe), and speed events. She is going to be my responsibility. The only things I will get help with are the things I literally can't do by myself(adding round bales to the pasture, driving the trailer(or any car/truck for that matter), making obstacles(I am not allowed to touch the saw after that small incident in '08), and shots(I can't hit the right spots) So I have complete control over almost everything(except vaccines, dewormer, and stabling) Including names, training, and show schedules.
I am planning on going to a few small shows over the years and she needs a show name. Please nothing with the word Strawberry in it and it can't be a copyrighted name(like a brand or toy) | Snow on the Roses (barn name Rosey or Snowy)

Here you might get 2500-3500. | Question ; Horse acting oddly strange ? I have owned my horse for 3 years now and he is acting pretty strange tonight. I was just outside visiting him. Now, he was acting his usual when I went up to him. He walked to me and that's the same. But then I would just stand there and watch him. He was starting to act oddly strange after. He would look at me and then he would start walking around. He walked over to his shelter and then back to me. Then he did that again. The second round he walked, he stopped and ate a little piece of grass and then walked over to me. Then I would move like three feet away, and then he would walk over to me. I kept moving more and more to see if he would still follow me like a puppy dog and he did ! What is going on with him ?! (This isn't really bad right now, just weird !) And then he started nibbling on my snow suit and then my gloves so I thought he was hungry. So I went over to his own - free - feeding hay bale, and took some non - wet hay from the middle and offered it to him. He looked away and ignored. I offered him lots more and still a no. Then I was just standing there, not watching him and then he did this weird sound and wiggled his head and kind of a small trot towards me. I moved out of the way, and where I WAS standing, he stopped right there. (I mean, if I was still standing there, he would have stopped right in front of me not hurting me). What do you think is the matter with him ?
He is lame at the moment and cannot be ridden til Spring. (Vet - checked).
If he needs the vet, we do not want to call them OVER here, and if we had to go there, we would have to wait for friend to deliver their trailer. (We don't have a trailer YET - looking for one).
NO RUDE COMMENTS !
Thankyou ! | | It sounds like he was just bored, and possibly lonely. Does he have any horse friends out there with him? | How much would you charge for this? How much would you charge for these facilities?
Pasture livery or DIY.
2 bales of shavings or 3 bales of straw (in with livery, can buy more at a price that we bought them for: £2.50 shavings, £2.00 straw.)
1/2 acre paddock (small i know but that's why we offer stable too) behind small cottage.
Someone on site all hours (my auntie and uncle own the paddock, house and the village shop and tea rooms next door.)
In a village with about 10 houses and local pub.
Fencing runs along with reinforced fence along river bank (about 10 foot drop to the river so unlikely to flood)
Stable in the house's back garden with bedroom and kitchen looking over it.
Yard lights and soon to be padlocked fences.
The paddock runs down the side on the drive and right round, down along a dirt track lane.
Quiet, however only one horse would be able to be kept unless it was a small pony such as a shetland.
3 goats are planning on entering the scene too. We have 3 definite hens and 2 chicks which we don't know the gender of yet.
Foxes and feral cats are very minimal as we live on a shooting estate and gamekeepers are out every night on "pest control".
Very nice, long (6 miles or so), quiet hacks from Febuary-August (?) when shoots aren't running.
We get very bad snow and ice here which can sometimes be as much as 7 feet from November to January anyway so it isn't as much of a problem.
Very nice, friendly community.
Big hunts run here over winter.
Need your own trailer if planning on hunting or showing.
3 small bales of hay per week included. More can be bought (same conditions as bedding)
No arena.
What do you think? | | It all depends on where you live, look at boarding stables around you and see what they are charging as a basic price. It widely varies on region because in NY for full board you can pay up to $1,000 a month, while in Texas for full board you may pay as little as $200 a month for the same quality place. I would reccommend you build a riding ring if you want to be able to get more money for the place. But as I said look at how much boarding is in neighboring towns and what facilities they have, compare them to your own and base a price off that. | Funny horse jokes????? Boredom is a wonderful thing isn't it? lol.
Just wanted to know if you had any funny horse jokes.
Heres some I know of:
How do you......
induce labor in a mare? Take a nap.
cure equine constipation? Load them in a clean trailer.
cure equine insomnia? Take them in a halter class.
get a horse to stay very calm and laid back? Enter them in a liberty class.
get a horse to wash their own feet? Clean the water trough and fill it with fresh water.
get a mare to come in heat? Take her to a show.
get a mare in foal the first cover? Let the wrong stallion get out of his stall.
make sure that a mare has that beautiful, perfectly marked foal you always wanted? Sell her before she foals.
get a show horse to set up perfect and really stretch? Get him out late at night or anytime no one is a round to see him.
induce a cold snap in the weather? Clip a horse.
make it rain? Mow a field of hay.
make a small fortune in the horse business? Start with a large one.
One morning the farmer went out at sunrise to feed the horses, he fed all of his horses but one. As he was walking to his mare's stall to feed her, he discovered she wasn't there. So he told his wife and they looked for her all day and finally at sunset the farmer opens the door to the barn and discovers his mare with her head in a half empty bag of sweet feed, and the farmer yells to his wife: "FOUND'ER!"
There was a preacher who was trying to sell his horse. A man stopped by to see how the horse rode. The preacher told the man that instead of saying, “walk", say, “praise the Lord,” and instead of saying, “whoa,” say, “amen.” So the man got on the horse and said, “praise the Lord,” and the horse started to walk. The man then said, “praise the Lord,” again and the horse started to trot. He said it a few more times, then the horse started galloping. Suddenly a cliff appeared. The man yelled "Whoa!". The horse didn't stop. He tried yelling al sorts of things, and he tried to pull the horse up, but it wouldn't stop. Then suddenly he remembered what to say. The man said, “amen.” The horse stopped right before they fell off. The man was so releived that he put his hand on his forehead and then said, ”Praise the Lord.”
MURPHY'S HORSE LAWS
There is no such thing as a sterile barn cat.
No one ever notices how you ride until you fall off.
The least useful horse in your barn will eat the most, require shoes every four weeks and need the vet at least once a month.
A horse's misbehavior will be in direct proportion to the number of people who are watching.
Your favorite tack always gets chewed on, and your new blanket gets torn.
Tack you hate will never wear out and blankets you hate cannot be destroyed.
Horses you hate cannot be sold and will outlive you.
Clipper blades will become dull when your horse is half clipped.
If you approach within 50 feet of your barn in clean clothes, you will get dirty.
The number of horses you own will increase to the number of stalls in your barn.
Your barn will fall down without baling twine.
Hoof picks always run a way from home.
If you fall off, you will land on the site of your most recent injury.
If you are winning, then quit, because there is only one way to go. Down!
There's more but I don't want to bore ya'll! Haha.
What jokes do you have? | He He - Thanks I had a good laugh... here's one for you!!
